HUEY – ID#A431318

My name is HUEY.

I am a neutered male, brown brindle and white Pit Bull Terrier mix.

The shelter staff think I am about 3 years old.

I have been at the shelter since Mar 10, 10分11选5.

Shelter Staff made the following comments about this animal:

We have a special guy with a special problem.

Huey truly has a heart of gold. He was in foster for a couple of weeks and even though he’s just 3 years old he did great with his foster mama’s older small breed dogs, adjusting his energy level to avoid annoying or overwhelming them. He even did great with her cats! He let his foster know every time he had to go outside and didn’t have any accidents. It was so hard for her to bring him back!

Huey came in with some weird spots on his little feet and some all-around irritated, unhappy skin. We thought maybe he had allergies but once our veterinarian got a good look at his feet he knew he would need a biopsy and worried we were in for something more serious than allergies.

The results came back. It was good news in that we finally had a diagnosis for this guy but it is going to be difficult to work through. Huey has something called Pemphigus Foliaceus, an autoimmune skin disease, in which the body’s immune system attacks the connections between its own skin cells. This disease cannot be spread to other animals or humans.

Huey may need a lifetime of continued support to manage his illness. This disease is treated with immunosuppressants so we have to wait until he’s out of the shelter to begin the treatment process. We will pay for two months of the medication he needs and the bloodwork for that time period, but we need an adopter who will be able to take over costs after that. Initially, he would need blood work monthly at roughly $125 per test but that could be backed off to every three months if he responds well.

We know this is a big ask. It’s a really big ask. But Huey is only three and he’s really awesome. He deserves to live a life where he is fully loved and spoiled and free from pain and itching. We don’t know how he will respond to the treatment and sometimes dogs do make a full recovery and can be removed from medicine.

Honestly, In the past, we would have thought there is no way we can find an owner to take on this responsibility and Huey would have been euthanized. With all our hearts we thank our awesome supporters who have shown us time and time again they will stand behind the lives we save. We know we can find the perfect 10分11选5 for him.

Please know that we are only guessing at a predominant breed or breed mix for the dogs in our Adoption Center. Visual breed identification is very unreliable, and we have no way of guaranteeing the breed mix of any dog. Here at our shelter, we get to know each dog as an individual and will do our best to describe each dog based on personality, not by breed label. Ask to meet me so you can get to know my personality.
